The place

Some placesthe noise stops.

Kasar sits above Almora in Kumaon, at 2,116 metres, among oak forest and Himalayan cedar with the snow peaks in the distance. It is the kind of altitude where the nervous system finally has nothing to react to.

People have come to these hills to think for a very long time, with D. H. Lawrence and Swami Vivekananda among them. That is not decoration. Somewhere carrying millennia of contemplative practice does something to the quality of your attention.

Good to know

Questions,answered.

01Who are these retreats for?
People who have arrived somewhere respectable and are quietly unconvinced by it. People standing at a crossroads in work, relationship or identity. People carrying something unprocessed who are ready to look at it honestly, in a small group of others doing the same.
02Do I need meditation or yoga experience?
None at all. Every practice is guided from the ground up, and most people arrive having never sat formally in their lives.
03Is this a religious retreat?
No. The work draws on Vedic philosophy, modern neuroscience and NLP, but asks you to believe nothing. People of every background are welcome, including those of none.
04How physically demanding are they?
Gentle to moderate. There is walking, often at altitude, but nothing you need to train for. Adaptations are always available. Tell us what you need in your application and we will make it work.
05Do I have to give up my phone?
We ask you to disconnect during retreat hours, with a daily window to check in with family if you need it. This is not a rule for its own sake. Most of what a retreat offers only becomes available once the interruptions stop.
06Why is it by application rather than booking?
Because the groups are small and the days are intimate, so who is in the room matters. Every application is read personally. It is not a test, and there are no right answers, only true ones.
07What is usually included?
Accommodation, all meals, every session and workshop, and the workbooks and materials you will use. Travel to and from the retreat is arranged by you. Exact details vary by retreat and are published with each one.
08What if I cannot afford it?
A small number of seats are usually fully funded. Share your circumstances honestly in the application. It is read with care, and it will not count against you.
09When will the December and February dates be announced?
Soon. Register your interest using any of the buttons on this page and you will hear before the dates are published here.
